hip

Culturally in-tune

Hip has two main clusters of meaning from different origins.

The hip is the joint where the leg meets the torso, or the fleshy area around it: She stood with her hands on her hips.

Hip also means aware of current trends and fashions—culturally attuned, cool: a hip neighborhood, hip to what's happening.

The adjective spawned hipster and hippie.

A third hip is the fruit of a rose plant, as in rose hip tea.
