garret

Room under eaves

A garret is a small room or space directly beneath the roof of a house, typically cramped and poorly finished.

The word carries associations with poverty and artistic struggle—the proverbial starving artist lives in a garret: He spent years writing in a cold Parisian garret.

Distinguished from attic mainly by connotation: attics store things; garrets house people, usually reluctantly.
