top

Peak or plaything

As a noun or quasi-adjective, top has the connotation of being highest, uppermost, and the opposite of bottom.

The use of top with physical things (top of the building) is extended to abstract things to mean most important or prominent (top of the charts, the top earner).

Though infrequently applied in temporal contexts, top usually means first: the top of the fourth inning.

This cluster of meanings is carried over to the verb top, whose most frequent meaning is be at the top: The song topped the charts for twenty weeks.

With physical things, top can mean add or remove a lid or cover.
