rocket

Thrust-propelled projectile vehicle

Modern use of the noun rocket is mostly for spacecraft.

This has displaced the older meaning used in the rocket’s red glare, which was about a projectile weapon fueled by gases.

The verb rocket is used figuratively for things that fly into space or through the air, or things that rise very quickly: Poverty rates are rocketing upwards.

A different noun rocket is the British English name for a plant in the mustard family, also called arugula.
