flaps

Hinged aircraft surfaces

Flaps are hinged surfaces on an aircraft wing that extend during takeoff and landing to increase lift at lower speeds: The pilot lowered the flaps for final approach.

By extension, flaps can mean any hinged or loose piece that hangs from something larger—the flap of an envelope, a tent flap, a cat flap in a door.

In a state of agitation, someone may be in a flap about something.
