vestibule

Small entrance room

A vestibule is a small entrance hall or passage between the outer door and the interior of a building—a transitional space where you might stamp snow off your boots before entering fully.

The term extends to similar enclosed spaces: the vestibule between train cars, or in anatomy, a cavity forming an entrance to another cavity: the vestibule of the ear.
