cockpit

Where pilots sit

A cockpit is the compartment where a pilot sits to control an aircraft, or where the driver sits in a racing car.

On boats, the cockpit is a recessed area in the deck where the helmsman steers.

The word originally meant a pit for cockfighting—a small enclosed space where combat takes place—which extended to any cramped area of intense activity: the cockpit of Europe, meaning a region of frequent warfare.
