touchdown

End zone arrival

A touchdown is a score in American football worth six points, achieved when a player carries or catches the ball in the opponent's end zone.

The term comes from rugby, where the ball must literally touch down, though in American football it need only cross the goal line.

Extended to any successful completion: The spacecraft made a safe touchdown on Mars.

In casual speech, touchdown celebrates any win or accomplishment: Got the promotion—touchdown!
