gangplank
Ship-to-shore walkway
A gangplank is a movable board or ramp used to bridge the gap between a ship and a dock, allowing people to board or disembark.
The term evokes the age of sailing ships and pirate lore—prisoners forced to walk the plank were sent off a similar board into the sea.
Modern equivalents are usually called gangways.
