railing

Horizontal safety bar

A railing is a barrier made of rails—horizontal bars supported by vertical posts—installed along stairs, balconies, bridges, or elevated walkways to prevent falls: She gripped the railing as she descended the icy steps.

Railings also line decks and porches, providing something to lean against.

The term can refer to the structure as a whole or to the material used to construct it: wrought-iron railing, wooden railing.
