quay

Harbor loading structure

A quay is a wharf or platform along a waterfront where ships dock to load and unload cargo or passengers.

Unlike a pier, which extends into the water, a quay typically runs parallel to the shore: Fishing boats lined the quay.

The word is pronounced like "key."
