balance beam
Narrow elevated apparatus
A balance beam is a narrow, raised beam used in gymnastics, typically four inches wide and about four feet off the ground.
Gymnasts perform routines of leaps, turns, and acrobatic moves on it: She nailed her balance beam routine.
The apparatus tests precision and poise—a metaphor sometimes borrowed: Parenting is a balance beam between protection and independence.
