landing gear

Touchdown support system

Landing gear is the system of wheels, skids, or floats that supports an aircraft on the ground and absorbs the impact of landing.

Most aircraft have retractable landing gear that folds into the fuselage during flight to reduce drag: The pilot lowered the landing gear for final approach.

Helicopters typically use skids; seaplanes use floats.
