attic

Room above ceiling

An attic is the space directly under a roof, typically used for storage.

Unlike a finished upper floor, an attic is usually unheated and accessed by a ladder or narrow stairs.

Attics accumulate forgotten belongings: We found old photographs in the attic.

The word also describes anything relating to this space: attic insulation, attic fan. (Capitalized Attic relates to ancient Athens.)
