tarmac

Where jets park

Tarmac is a paved surface, especially at an airport where planes taxi, load, and unload: The plane sat on the tarmac for two hours.

The word comes from tarmacadam—a road surface of crushed stone bound with tar.

Though technically distinct from modern asphalt, tarmac now serves as a general term for any paved runway or apron area.
