deficit

More out than in

Deficit denotes a deficiency or lack of something.

In language about money and budgets, it is the opposite of surplus.

In other contexts, deficit denotes a lack of something that results in a handicap or disadvantage: a cognitive deficit.

Deficit is also popularly used when two numbers are compared to show the difference between them, especially in sports scores: The Roughriders erased an 11-point deficit to defeat Toronto on Tuesday night.
