attempt

Give it shot

An attempt is an effort to do something, especially something difficult or uncertain: Her attempt to climb Everest ended at base camp.

The verb means to try: He attempted to explain but gave up.

An attempt on someone's life is an effort to kill them.

Unlike try, attempt suggests formality or seriousness—you try a new restaurant but attempt a summit.
