pump

Moves liquids mechanically

A pump is a device that moves fluids using suction, pressure, or a combination of these.

Many pumps are natural, like the heart, and many are also made for particular purposes: water pump, gas pump.

The verb pump means to use a pump or to move a fluid by means of a pump: Pump the water out of the basement.

Pump has taken on figurative meanings.

If you move something up and down, as you would the handle of a water pump, the same verb can be used: She said hello and pumped my hand.

If you pump someone, you try to elicit information from them.
