hypertrophy

Tissue volume increase

Hypertrophy is the enlargement of an organ or tissue through the growth of its cells rather than an increase in their number.

The term appears most often in discussions of muscle: weight training causes muscle hypertrophy.

In medicine, hypertrophy can signal disease—cardiac hypertrophy indicates an enlarged heart, often from overwork.

The verb means to undergo such enlargement: The left ventricle had hypertrophied.
