squats

Deep knee bends

Squats are an exercise in which you lower your body by bending the knees, then rise back up—a fundamental movement for building leg and core strength: I do fifty squats every morning.

The plural also refers to places where people live without legal claim: The police cleared the squats along the riverbank.

In weightlifting, squat numbers indicate how much someone can lift in this position: My squats are finally improving.
