trapezius

Upper back muscle

The trapezius is a large, flat muscle extending from the base of the skull down to the middle of the back and out to the shoulder blades.

It moves the head and shoulders—shrugging, tilting the head back, and stabilizing the shoulder blades during arm movement.

Athletes and weightlifters often develop prominent traps: He did shrugs to build his trapezius.
