helium
Second lightest element
Helium is a chemical element, a colorless, odorless gas that is lighter than air.
It's best known for making balloons and blimps float.
Helium is also used in welding, deep-sea diving tanks, and to cool superconducting magnets.
Because it's inert—it doesn't react with other elements—helium is safe around flames and in sensitive equipment.
Inhaling helium temporarily raises the pitch of your voice, a party trick that can be dangerous in excess.
