valence
Atom's bonding number
Valence is the combining capacity of an atom—how many bonds it can form with other atoms.
Carbon has a valence of four, hydrogen one.
The concept extends beyond chemistry: in psychology, valence describes the positive or negative quality of an emotion or experience.
More broadly, valence can mean the degree to which something attracts or repels: The issue has strong political valence.
