dislocation

Out of place

Dislocation is displacement from a proper position.

In medicine, a dislocated joint has bones forced out of alignment: She suffered a shoulder dislocation in the fall.

More broadly, dislocation describes any severe disruption of normal arrangement or function: the economic dislocation caused by the pandemic, the dislocation of communities during wartime.

The word captures both physical displacement and the disorder that follows.
