Epicurus
Ancient Athenian hedonist
Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher who founded a school teaching that pleasure—particularly tranquility and freedom from pain—is the highest good.
His name now labels a philosophy: Epicureanism emphasizes simple pleasures, friendship, and avoiding anxiety.
Despite popular misconception, Epicurus advocated moderation rather than indulgence: an Epicurean lifestyle of quiet contentment.
