halogen

Chlorine's periodic family

Halogen names a group of five chemical elements—fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine—that form salts when combined with metals.

The word comes from Greek roots meaning "salt-producing." Halogens are highly reactive and appear throughout chemistry and daily life: chlorinated water, fluoride toothpaste, iodized salt.

A halogen lamp uses a halogen gas to extend the filament's life and produce bright, white light.
