cation

Positively charged particle

A cation is an ion with a positive electrical charge, formed when an atom loses one or more electrons.

The term contrasts with anion, which carries a negative charge.

In chemistry, cations are attracted to cathodes (negative electrodes) during electrolysis: Sodium cations migrate toward the cathode.
