materialism
Devotion to possessions
Materialism has two main meanings.
In philosophy, it's the view that physical matter is the fundamental reality—that everything, including mind and consciousness, can be explained in terms of material processes.
In everyday use, materialism is preoccupation with acquiring possessions and wealth rather than spiritual or intellectual pursuits: The holiday season brings out the worst materialism.
The two senses share a focus on the tangible over the abstract.
