covalent
Bonds by sharing electrons
Covalent describes a type of chemical bond in which atoms share electrons rather than transferring them completely.
In a covalent bond, two atoms each contribute electrons to a shared pair, holding the atoms together: Water molecules form through covalent bonds between hydrogen and oxygen.
The term contrasts with ionic bonds, where electrons transfer from one atom to another.
