grain

Wood's natural pattern

Two main meanings of grain inspire nearly all uses of the word.

One is to designate a small, hard seed that might be used as food (grain of rice) or something resembling that (grain of sand).

The other denotes the pattern in a surface, especially of wood, where the grain means the general direction in which fibers are oriented.

Something that goes against the grain is contrary to what is wanted or expected.

A grain of truth or some other thing is a very small but meaningful quantity of it.
