anion

Electron-rich particle

An anion is a negatively charged ion—an atom or molecule that has gained one or more electrons.

In electrolysis, anions migrate toward the positive electrode (the anode).

Common anions include chloride, hydroxide, and sulfate.

The opposite of anion is cation, which carries a positive charge.
