shell
Turtle's protective layer
A shell is a natural protective covering, of a sea creature like an oyster or clam, or of an egg or nut.
The enclosing aspect of shells inspires other uses, such as a pastry shell (for holding pie contents).
A shell company is one that exists merely to own another company.
To shell something is to remove the usable part from the shell.
When this is already done, the items are shelled: He added the shelled walnuts to the cookie dough.
To shell is also to bombard with projectile weapons fired from a cannon, which are shells.
