molecule
Smallest compound unit
A molecule is the smallest unit of a substance that retains its chemical properties—two or more atoms bonded together.
Water molecules consist of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.
In casual use, molecule suggests something extremely small: There's not a molecule of truth in what he said.
The adjective is molecular: molecular biology, molecular structure.
