delta

Symbol for change

Delta is a Greek letter (Δ, δ) widely used in mathematics and science to indicate change or difference: delta-v in physics, delta t for elapsed time.

The triangular shape of the uppercase letter gives its name to river deltas—fan-shaped deposits of sediment where rivers meet larger bodies of water: the Mississippi delta, the Nile delta.

In aviation and military contexts, delta describes triangular wing configurations: delta wing.

The word also denotes a fourth item in a series or, in informal usage, a change or adjustment: What's the delta between the two versions? (Capitalized Delta is the airline, NATO phonetic letter, or proper name.)
