graphite

Slippery carbon form

Graphite is a soft, gray-black form of carbon used in pencil cores, lubricants, and batteries.

Despite being pure carbon like diamond, graphite's layered molecular structure makes it slippery and conductive rather than hard.

The "lead" in pencils is actually graphite mixed with clay—the more graphite, the darker and softer the mark.
