electronegativity

Atomic electron greed

Electronegativity is a measure of how strongly an atom attracts electrons toward itself when bonded to another atom.

Fluorine has the highest electronegativity; metals like sodium have low values.

The difference in electronegativity between bonded atoms determines whether electrons are shared equally (covalent) or pulled toward one atom (polar or ionic): The electronegativity difference between oxygen and hydrogen makes water a polar molecule.
