mass
How much matter
The earliest use of mass is to denote a Christian religious service.
The separately derived and much more frequent use of mass is a noun, verb, and adjective whose meanings relate to the idea of substance.
In physics, mass is the quantity of something as determined by its weight.
A mass is a body of matter or a large quantity of something, as in a mass of sand or a mass of soldiers.
As an adjective, mass often indicates something affecting a surprisingly large number of people: mass appeal; mass murder.
When people or objects mass, they form a mass: Troops are massing at the border.
