beta

After alpha, scientifically

Beta, β, is the second letter of the Greek alphabet, with a sound like B, which occupies the same place in the Roman alphabet.

With the advent of the computer age, beta has taken on new meanings, many of them associated with second, reflecting beta’s ordinal status.

Beta testing is a second phase of software development when users can report bugs.

Something that is in beta is at this stage, not quite ready for official launch or release.
