Latin

Source of Romance

Latin is the language of ancient Rome, which evolved into the Romance languages—Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian.

It survives in scientific nomenclature, legal terminology, Catholic liturgy, and academic mottos.

As an adjective, Latin describes things Roman or Romance-language-related: Latin America, Latin music.

A Latin is a person from a Latin-speaking culture, now often synonymous with Latino.
