rood

Chancel's large crucifix

A rood is a crucifix, especially a large one mounted on a beam or screen at the entrance to the chancel of a medieval church.

The rood screen separated the nave from the choir.

The word is archaic outside historical and ecclesiastical contexts.

Rood also once meant a quarter-acre of land, a sense now obsolete.
