syntax

Rules governing sentences

Syntax is the arrangement of words into phrases and sentences.

In language, syntax governs word order and grammatical structure—why the dog bit the man means something different from the man bit the dog.

In computing, syntax refers to the rules for writing valid code; a syntax error means the program can't parse what you wrote.

The word extends to any system with structural rules: the syntax of a musical composition.
