cardinals

Conclave voting members

Cardinals are high-ranking officials in the Roman Catholic Church, second only to the pope and responsible for electing new popes.

The word also refers to bright red songbirds native to the Americas, named for their color resembling the red robes worn by church cardinals.

In mathematics, cardinal numbers indicate quantity—one, two, three—as opposed to ordinal numbers indicating position.

The cardinals gathered in Rome for the conclave. (Capitalized Cardinals refers to sports teams.)
