math

Algebra and calculus

Math is the informal word for mathematics—the study of numbers, quantities, shapes, and patterns.

In American English, math is standard in all but the most formal contexts: I have a math test tomorrow, Do the math.

British English prefers maths.

Beyond academics, math refers to any calculation: The math doesn't work on this budget proposal.
