morphology

Study of forms

Morphology is the study of form and structure.

In biology, it refers to the physical shape and arrangement of organisms or their parts: the morphology of a cell, the morphology of flowering plants.

In linguistics, morphology examines how words are built from smaller meaningful units—prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

The word extends to any field analyzing structural forms: urban morphology, the morphology of crystals.
