epitaph

Grave marker text

An epitaph is an inscription on a tomb or gravestone commemorating the person buried there.

By extension, it can be any brief statement honoring the dead, or a fitting final summation of someone's life or work: His last failed venture was a fitting epitaph for his career.

The related word epithet is sometimes confused with epitaph.
