adjective
Word describing nouns
An adjective is a word that gives more information about a noun.
Adjectives nearly always come before the noun, as in red bird or difficult exam, but a few adjectives follow the noun, as in inspector general or ambassador designate.
Adjectives can be used in a predicate after a linking verb, in sentences like The weather was hot or She became hysterical.
An adjective that can only be used in a predicate, not before a noun, is called a predicate adjective.
Many of these begin with a, such as alive and afraid.
