clave
Latin rhythm skeleton
Clave has two sources.
One is the past tense of cleave, an archaic verb meaning to split or to cling: The knight clave his enemy's shield in two.
The other is from Afro-Cuban music—a syncopated rhythmic pattern that forms the foundation of salsa, son, and related genres, or one of the wooden sticks used to play it: The drummer locked into the clave.
