inflection

Grammatical word change

Inflection is a change in the form of a word to express grammatical distinctions—tense, number, case, or mood: walked shows past tense, dogs shows plural.

The term also applies to variations in pitch or tone of voice: Her inflection rose at the end, turning the statement into a question.

An inflection point in mathematics is where a curve changes direction; in general use, it means a turning point or pivotal moment: The company reached an inflection point when it went public.
