Livy

Ancient Rome's historian

Livy was a Roman historian (59 BCE–17 CE) whose monumental work *Ab Urbe Condita* chronicled Rome from its legendary founding through the reign of Augustus.

Only about a quarter of his 142 books survive.

His vivid storytelling shaped how Western civilization understood early Rome—Romulus and Remus, the rape of Lucretia, Hannibal crossing the Alps.

References to Livy invoke classical historiography or the grand narrative tradition.
