cross
Span the gap
The many meanings of cross all arise from the one made famous by Jesus of Nazareth: an object formed by placing one straight beam or line on another, intersecting in a right angle at their midpoints.
The notion of two things meeting in a particular way persists in the cross that is a hybrid animal or plant, and in a boxing punch where the arm passes over the opponent’s arm.
When one thing crosses another, it goes from one side to the other, typically at a right angle, as when a bridge crosses a river.
If you cross something out, you draw a line or lines through it to obscure it.
